Overview

The canton was formed on 20 June 1979.
The flag is shown, graphically, on the municipal website, as horizontally divided light blue-white-green with seven green stars in the white stripe.
The flag is shown, graphically, on a PDF document available on the website of the Association of the Ecuadorian municipalities with only six stars.
On the PDF document, the municipal coat of arms is shown, however, with seven stars (as it is, logically, on the municipal website).
The change in the number of stars might have something to do with a change in the number of parishes.
The municipal website, however, still lists six parishes (Pacayacu, El Eno, Dureno, General Farfán, Santa Cecilia and Jambelí) but a seventh parish, Nueva Loja, is mentioned as bordering some of the six parishes. Lago Agrio, therefore, seems to have currently seven parishes.
The municipal flag is hoisted, together with the national and provincial flags, in the meeting room of the town hall. The stars cannot be counted on the photograph available on the municipal website, unfortunately. The photograph gives shades as very light blue and very dark green.

At provincial website, the flag with is with black stars and not green.
