Overview

The canton (capital, Santiago de Méndez) was formed on 13 November 1911.
Information on the flag seems to have been removed from the provincial website. Text given previously: "The flag is divided in three equal horizontal stripes; it is rectangular with bright colours representing the roads and inhabitants of the canton. Red represents the previous and current sacrifice of the inhabitants. Yellow represents the particular locations of Méndez and related places on lands rich in gold, whose colour is the most relevant representation of wealth. Green is the genuine symbol of the eastern places in which reflects the huge ocean of hope made of the forests."
