The municipality was formed on 2 September 1996. The page at Consejo Provincial del Caņar site contains also a black ans white photograph of the first native Mayor of the town, Pr. Abelina Morocho Pinguil. The flag behind her left shoulder seems to be the municipal flag, without trace of a coat of arms.
