In 1854 a young bargeman, Georg Grieshaber, began shipping construction materials, a growth business. His sons Sebastian and Wilhelm founded Gebr. Grieshaber in 1900 and had their first iron ship built three years later. After WWI the third generation took control through acquisition of sand and gravel exploitation sites as well as operating their own tugboats and motor vessels. WWII caused the loss of all material but the experience gained in salvaging owned vessels was extended to those of other companies. As rebuilding Germany after the war required enormous efforts , Gebr. Grieshaber had to expand vigourously. Push navigation was introduced and a new dredging vessel put to work. Still family owned, Grieshaber is now led by the fifth generation. (From the ‘Geschichte’ i.e. history section.)
The private port of Ingelheim on the Rhine is owned by Grieshaber which firm cooperates with others - having comparable interests - in the Rhein-Neckar-Kies concern. Interestingly, another related firm, BSD at Dessau, is active in cleaning waterways, rebuilding river banks, etc. in an ecologically sound manner.
Flag found on above site shows a blue house flag with a white diamond
– not touching the edges – bearing blue gothic letters ‘G.G.’. This
Binnenvaart
page however gives better detail in its drawing (page dedicated to
vessel ‘Rheinau’): Clearly taken from some edition of “Flaggen auf dem
Rhein” (found in 1952 ed.), this version shows the initials - and the dots
- in black. This colour is confirmed by a recent German eBay offer
concerning a clearly new Grieshaber table flag, only the shape of the dots
is slightly different!
