The company was located in Hamburg and ran the vessel MS KLAUS TUROWSKI, chartered by Johs. Thode.
It is a blue over red horizontal bicolour, the colours divided by a thin white stripe. In the centre is a white diamond, containing a black capital “T” of double height superimposed by a red capital “N”.
Title: „Flaggen, Schornsteine, Reedereien- Flaggen und Schornsteine der deutschen Reedereien und ihre Schiffe über 300 BRT“; Hamburg 1957; p.F7.

Danz & Tietjens

One of Greek ship repairer Carell’s references is a German freighting agency, click ‘References’ (top) and select ‘Burger Bereederungs Contor’ GmbH located at Burg/Dithmarschen, a small town near the mouth of the River Elbe.
The name means ‘Freight Office of Burg’ and a house flag is shown in the letterhead (date 3 Dec. 1997).

On a horizontally divided field blue-white-red (surely this is no coincidence in Schleswig-Holstein?) is left out a diamond shape leaving room for black initials ‘HED’ touching each other, the ‘D’ having a large vertical stem.

In fact BBC, as the company is also named, is part of the Danz & Tietjens shipping group also located at Burg.  Homepage, showing the house flag: rendered in dark blue, the initials are now ‘HD’ and interlocked, the ‘H’ placed somewhat higher than the ‘D’.  Compare with the table flag at Josef Nuesse’s site, last on this page: the initials are black and the ‘H’ is placed lower than the ‘D’ (picture not attached).  Unfortunately the following photo is inconclusive.

Some highlights gleaned from the Danz & Tietjens pages: the Danz family (active in shipping since 1824) and the Tietjens family (first ship locally built 1870) operated out of Burg for generations, started cooperating in 1969 and finally founded Danz & Tietjens Schiffahrts KG in 1982.
Nowadays 22 container ships and bulk carriers are operated, mainly under the UK and Antigua & Barbuda flags; BBC – operating 7 ships –  is one of the members of this group.  In addition, Danz &Tietjens – still a family business -  offer ship management, chartering, insurance, and similar services to other firms.
(I suppose ‘H’ refers to company founder *H*ans Rudolf Tietjens and ‘D’ to co-founder Reinhard *D*anz.)

More on Burger Bereederung (some commercial and financial background, in German) here. In view of the above we might consider the house flag on the BBC letterhead (comparatively recent i.e. 1997) as a variant or precursor of the current Danz & Tietjens flag, the Nuesse version having a slight edge as it a photo rather than a drawing.  Of course there is still the question of which initial should be placed higher...
