Samtgemeinde Elbmarsch
Samtgemeinde (SG*) Elbmarsch (Harburg county, Lower Saxony). It consists
of the municipalities Drage, Marschacht,
Tespe.
Description of flag: It is a green over yellow hrizontal bicolour with
the coat of arms in its centre.
Description of coat of arms: The shield is divided per fess. In the
chief is a blue passant lion, red tongued and red armed in a golden (=yellow)
field. The base shows a green field divided by a bendy wavy silver (=white)
line with a golden horseshow in the upper sinister corner.
Meaning: The lion is part of many coats of arms of this county. I believe,
that it was taken from the coat of arms of the dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg.
The wavy line is probably symbolizing the river Elbe. The horseshoe is
a very old symbol, which is said to bring luck. It is derived from an ancient
moon goddess, having the the same form (crescent).
Source: I got the information from Yvonne Herold, employee of the municipality.
My image is based on a photo of Stephanie Heuser, another employee of the
municipality.
*A "Samtgemeinde" (SG*), also called "collective municipality"
is a combination of several municipalities to an administrative community
in Lower Saxony.
