Warendorf county (Northrhine-Westphalia)
Description of flag:
The flags ratio is 3:5. It is a red over yellow horizontal bicolour with the county's coat of arms in its centre.
Description of banner:
It is a red and yellow vertical bicolour with the counties coat of arms shifted to the top.
Description of coat of arms:
The red shield is divided by a golden (=yellow) bendy wavy line. In the sinister chief and the dexter base is a golden wheel with 10 rays formed like small crescents.
Meaning:
The wavy line is taken from the coat of arms of the city of Beckum. Beckum was before the capital of another county today being the southern part of Warendorf county. The city of Beckum had however three silver lines. The tinctures had been changed to turn out, that the archbishops of Münster were rulers until 1803. The wheels are taken from the coat of arms of Warendorf's administrators (germ.: Vogt) of the archbishops. They are flowery ornaments. In 1938 they were re-interpreted as sun-wheels under NSDAP-rule.
