The Markian chequered fess consists of three connected fesses, each
having seven alternating red and white squares. The top fess is starting
with a red square at the dexter side. It was a symbol of the counts of
Mark. It is part of many Westphalian flags and/or coats of arms, e.g. Hamm,
Altena, Ennepetal, Gummersbach, Iserlohn,
Wattenscheid.
