City of Rüthen (Soest county; Northrhine-Westphalia)
Description of flag:
The flag's ratio is 3:5. It is a horizontal white over red over white
flag. The ratio between the stripes is 1:3:1. The coat of arms is within
the red stripe shifted to the hoist.
Description of coat of arms:
In a silver (=white) shield is a black cross, touching all edges with
a red rhomb in each angle and a fifth rhomb in the centre of the cross.
Meaning:
The cross is the symbol of the archbishopric and electorate of Cologne.
The rhombs (German: Rauten) are symbolizing the cities name. Some people
say that Karl I. the great granted the rhombs as a symbol of the five wounds
of Jesus Christ. This must be however an urban legend, because the coat
of arms was unknown before the 12th century.
