Flecken Freiburg a.d. Elbe (Samtgemeinde Nordkehdingen ; Stade county;
Lower Saxony).
A „Flecken“ is a denomination, which is, as far as I know, in Northern
Germany only used in Lower Saxony. According to Dr.Ulrich March, former
headmaster and historician in Bad Bramstedt, Schleswig-Holstein), you can
find the “Flecken” already in the names of streets, then called either
“Bleek” or “Bleck”. A “Flecken” was a town with minor rights in comparison
with a city. One substantial right was to have a market. Therefore it might
be translated as market town. Today the title is probably without any importance.
To gain the title of a city a town needs at least 10,000 inhabitants, unless
the title wasn’t gained very early.
Description of flag: It is a white over red horizontal bicolour with
the coat of arms in its centre.
Description of coat of arms: In a red field is a black castle masoned
silver with a closed golden gate. The walls are topped by two silver torrets,
each having pinnacles and a triangular shaped gable. Te castle is topped
by two crossed silver keys.
Meaning: The coat of arms has a long tradition. The town was fortified
in the middle ages.

three black wolf traps.
Meaning: The green hill is representing the former settlement of Altendorf.
The wavy line is representing the kin of von Drewes, that had died out.
Finally the wolf traps are representing the former settlement of Wolfsbruch,
where the last wolves in Kehdingen had been caught.
