Kreis Recklinghausen (Northrhine-Westphalia)
Description of banner:
It is a black-white-green vertical tricolour with the county's coat
of arms in its centre.
Description of coat of arms:
In a green shield is a white nettle-leaf. Within the nettle-leaf is
a black cross superimposed by a golden (=yellow) key.
Meaning:
The cross is taken from the coat of arms of the archbishopric and electorate
of Cologne. The territory "Vest Recklinghausen"
had been part of Cologne. The key is the attribute of St.Peter, being protector
of Cologne. The nettle-leaf is taken from the coat of arms of the counts
of Schaumburg, rulers of Holstein, who had distrained on the Vest Recklinghausen
from 1476 until 1576. Others say, that the nettle-leaf was also the ensign
of the Lords of Lembeck and that therefore the green colour was chosen.
Lembeck is a small village near Recklinghausen with a famous water-castle.
