City of Rietberg

Description of flag: It is a red over yellow horizontal bicolour with the coat of arms shifted to the hoist.
Description of the coat of arms: The shield is divided per fess. The chief shows a golden(=yellow) eagle in a red field. The base shows two symetric red water-lily leaves in a golden(=yellow) field.
The city was built in 1970 and kept the coat of arms of the Amt Rietberg, consisting of the municipalities of Bokel, Druffel, Mastholte, Moese, Neuenkirchen, Rietberg, Varensell and Westerwiehe.
The coat of arms was granted on 14 May 1937. It was kept with permission of 28 June 1971. The Amt Rietberg was a sovereign county at least up to 1803, probably up to 1815 (Vienna Congress).
Meaning: The eagle was the ensign of an offspring of the Counts of Arnsberg, who founded their county in 1237. The water-lilies are symbolizing the location in a swampy region.

These informations and images are based on the book by Veddeler that we have in our bibliography as [ved03] Peter Veddeler's Wappen, Siegel, Flaggen. Die kommunalen Hoheitszeichen des Landschaftsverbandes, der Kreise, Städte und Gemeinden in Westfalen-Lippe, 2003 (in English: Coats-of-arms, seals, flags. The communal symbols of the Landscape Association, the counties, towns and municipalities in Westphalia-Lippe).
The flag has been authorized on 28 June 1971, by the Regierungspräsident in Detmold (district president).
In addition the hanging flag variant (Banner) has also been authorized, and is probably the preferred variant.
The gifs should be changed to the correct sizes (horizontal flag 360x216; hanging flag 216x540).
From 1953 till 1971 the city used a hanging flag, granted on 7 September 1953 by the Northrhine-Westphalian Minister of the Interior.
This was also red-yellow and showed the older coat-of-arms in the upper half.
