Overview

El Retén is a municipality in Magdalena department. It was founded on 24 June 1913 by General Gregorio Antonio Garzon Chacon.
The flag of El Retén is horizontally divided green-white and in its center a yellow circle bordered red.

Translated from municipal web site:
"Green represents the fertility and crops on the arable lands, which are significantly expanding.
White means the peace we desire so much.
Red represents the blood shed by the martyres of the banana plantations.
Yellow means the resources provided by the regional crops."  
The peasants working in the banana plantations owned by United Fruit Co. revolted in 1928 because of their low income and huge load of work.
