Páez is a municipality in the Cauca Department. The town of
Belalcazar, is the main urban center of the Municipality. It was
founded in 1905 by Valencia, Mosquera and Lemus.
The flag of Páez is horizontally divided green-yellow-red with
white cross at the canton.
Information in Spanish:
"Franja superior de color verde: significa la riqueza
natural del municipio, sus agrestes montañas, sus vegas
productivas y la variedad de productos que posee. Tiene en su
margen izquierda una cruz blanca que simboliza la llegada de los
misioneros con la religión católica y el deseo ferviente de
Paz.
Franja intermedia de color amarillo: significa la riqueza
cultural de sus gentes, su pujante economía aún sin explotar y
su futuro promisorio.
Franja inferior de color rojo: significa el ímpetu de sus etnias
en defensa de su raza, sus costumbres y sus tierras.
La bandera está sostenida sobre una vara de mando que simboliza
la autoridad de los cabildos."

"The upper, green stripe represents the natural resources of
the municipality, its rustic mountains, its productive lowlands
and the variety of its products. On its left part, a white cross
symbolizes the arrival of misionaries bringing the Roman Catholic
religion and the fervent aspiration to peace.
The middle, yellow stripe, represents the cultural resources of
the villagers, their economical power and their promising future.
The lower, red stripe represents the impetus of its ethnies to
defend their race, customs and lands.
The flag is hoisted to amace symbolizing the authority of the
municipal councils."
Páez is a multiethnic municipality, inhabited by natives form
the Páez ethny, Blacks and Metis, living in 15 native
reservations and two villages. Several of these settlements were
destroyed by an earthquake that claimed a lot of lives on 6 June
1994.
