Translated from municipal web site
"Designed by Elmer Ayonel Urrego, born in Santa María, the flag is made of three equal stripes showing the balance between the three elements represented by the three colours green, white and blue:
- Green, the colour of the mountains and shades of the landscape that surround us, represents the vegetal resources used for agriculture, as wel as the exuberant flora and fauna harboured by our tropical wet forests;
- Blue, symbolizing the colour of the sky and the clearness of the municipal waters, represents the water resources, responsible of 10% of the national energy supply, also a great potential for tourism;
- Yellow, as a light beam representing the potential for electricity that made of Santa María the 'Hydroelectricity Center of Colombia'."
