The Royal Hamilton Yacht Club

The Royal Hamilton Yacht Club (RHYC) opened its doors in 1888. Their website can be found at http://www.rhyc.on.ca/

If anyone visits the site and sees the picture of the RHYC ensign, the club asks that we dismiss it as a variant. Evidently, someone on their own had some "poor quality" ensigns made up, and the club doesn't want them to be considered "official" as it were.

You will notice that I have posted two ensigns with a St. Edwards crown and modern Canadian maple leaf. These two illustrations are drawn from art work the club graciously forwarded to me on 12 May, 2007 and represent the very latest rendition of the ensign as it will be manufactured. In somewhat popular Canadian fashion, the shorter ratio ensign is being made for use on smaller boats and yachts. In the RHYC's case, they are ordering 12x18 inch ensigns.

1965 Ensign

This ensign contains a more natural shaped maple leaf. The RHYC has used this variant recently and this can almost certainly be considered an accurate portrayal of the club's ensign before 1965.

The American Yacht List 1891 [qua91], provided on-line by Mystic Seaport Library shows a burgee without a crown. I took a peek and read in the club history (‘Our Story’) that in, or about, 1891 the club received the title ‘Royal,’ so the Yacht List shows a burgee about to disappear.

Erroneous Ensign

According to the RHYC staff that I have been communicating with, there never has been a version of the RHYC's ensign whereby the maple leaf was placed directly under the crown. The RHYC contends that past published illustrations showing such an ensign for the RHYC are erroneous. However, nobody seems willing to etch that in stone.
