City flag

Sometimes after June 2007, reports Le Sorel-Tracy Magazine, the Mayor of Contrecœur offered the municipal flag to two soldiers living in the town on their leave to Afghanistan. A colour photo of the ceremony shows the flag as white in proportions 1:2 with the city's coat of arms in the middle and the writing "Municipalité de Contrecoeur" in black "Gothic" letters placed below the arms. Both the motto on the scroll beyond the shield and the aforementioned writing are faultive, with "Contrecoeur" instead of "Contrecœur". On the motto, moreover, the grave accent on the "A" is missing, too (it should be "À").

The municipal website presents the municipal arms, with the motto correctly written.

The arms are " De gueules à la bande d'or chargée de trois cœurs de gueules, accompagnée de deux grappes de raisins d'or, feuillées du même. L'écu est soutenu à dextre par un lion d'or et à senestre par un griffon aussi d'or." (Gules a bend or charged with three hearts gules flanked by two grapes or leaved of the same. The shield supported dexter by a lion or and sinister by a griffin of the same).

The arms are derived from the arms of the family of Antoine de Pécaudy de Contrecœur (1596-1688), born in Dauphiné (France) and first Lord of the domain, founded in 1668. On the original arms, the bend was vert and the hearts or. The two grapes have been added to recall Barbe Denys de la Trinité, first Dame of Contrecœur and alleged founder of the parish, placed under the patronage of the Holy Trinity. The lion and the griffin come from the arms of Pécaudy and Denys, respectively.

The motto "À coeur vaillant tout est possible" means "Everything is possible for a valiant heart".

I saw this flag in July 1998.

The flag has the name of the city written in black capital letters (without the ligature) above the arms and nothing below them. On the scroll, the name of the city is written with the ligature and the "À" is correctly written.
