The flag of the City of Grande Prairie, Alberta (population: 40,226) has an image of a trumpeter swan which is an endangered species of waterfowl that can be seen in this area of Northwest Alberta between the months of April and October.
City Clerk, Karen Douglas, provided the following information about the municipal flag:
The City held a contest for the design in 1980 to celebrate Alberta's 75th Anniversary. The design was to be symbolic of the Peace River Country.
The winning design was by Mrs. Louise Lissoway.
The representations are as follows:
- Blue background - the City color
- Swan is the City's symbol
- Grain sheaf represents agriculture
- Trees represent forestry
- Oil derricks represent gas and oil
- Maple leafs represent Alberta's 75th Anniversary
The specific number of maple leaves on the flag (24) does not have any particular significance it was simply the number necessary to complete the circle.
