On 1 December 1975 the name, arms, and flag were all changed. Arms adopted at the time: within a wreath of yellow, ripe maize-cobs (symbol of agriculture) a cog-wheel (industry) and the star which has also been put on the flag. On the yellow ribbon, that has been bound around a stack of maize-cobs, are the initials of the name of the country.

However when the original flag was restored in 1990, the original national emblem was also. The new name of the country was retained, however. Arms: a quartered shield depicting a local Somba fortress, the medal of the Order of the Star of Benin, a palm tree and a sailing ship. The motto is 'Fraternite, Justice, Travail'- meaning: Fraternity, Justice, Work. (Re-)Adopted: 1 August 1990.
