Title: Signals Hobart Town
Medium: chart
Main author(s): Edward Murphy
Edition (publisher: place): (author): Hobart (Australia)
Language: English
Edition date: 1855 (1st ed.)
Format: 547×869 mm

Remarks: watercolour, pen and ink on paper.

Signed in ink lower right; inscribed in ink lower left: «Hobarton 1855». Title inscribed in ink upper centre. Inscribed in ink in centre of image: «Mr. J.M. Watts, Commander of the Brig Gertrude.» In each corner a sailing ship in full sail; two sailing ships centre left and right edges; signal station showing various signals for arriving ships, lower left; surrounded by flags and standards.
Ralph Kelly, 30 Aug 2003, quoting from the State Library of Tasmania website

From the style, it appears similar to a hand coloured chart produced in 1885 by O.H. Hedberg (a Hobart merchant of Swedish descent) and drawn by Edward Murphy. The original of that poster is found at the State Library of Tasmania and is dated 1855, but it is different in its details. If my memory is correct, Murphy produced about 6 charts — all hand drawn and coloured. I think the whole chart is a single work — the varying styles “filling up every corner”.
Ralph Kelly, 30 Aug 2003
