Title: British Flags & Emblems
Medium: book
Main author(s): Graham Bartram
Edition (publisher: place): The Flag Institute (United Kingdom)
Language: English
Edition date: 2004 (1st ed.)
Catalogue codes: ISBN 1-86232-297-X = ISBN 978-1-86232-297-4

The book includes the new flag protocol for the UK, a modernisation designed to cope with our new devolved governments, other constitutional changes, new concepts, etc. Some points will probably shock traditionalists, like double flagging on certain occasions!
Graham Bartram, 26 Apr 2004

This book is definitely a must have and I heartily recommend it to everyone, the overall presentation is very nice and the graphics are of great quality.

Source edition (publisher: place): Verlag von Bauer und Raspe: Nuremberg (Germany)
Format: 4to (30×20 ±5 cm)

Remarks: Hardbound. The armorial section is taken from Siebmacher’s 1605 source [g2h78]; flags are original to this edition. «Abtheilung» sic. Reprinted in [g2h78]. Cp. [apu99].

Shows about 550 flags hatched (Petra Sancta like), not coloured, six or eight to a page, drawn in great detail (First Volume Sixth Section: Flags), in total 749 flags; 27-page introduction comments them extensively, with dimensional data, useage etc., based on information from Imperial embassies and consulates worldwide. In spite of that a couple of flags are shown that are clearly mistaken, and a couple more non-existant, mostly “inherited” from older sources.
Santiago Dotor, 18 Jan 2002

In my opinion this flag related part of the Siebmacher has to be handled with care. Some errors are clear, others might have been correct some time ago, others have been proven as errors only long after the book was published (eg. Lüneburg). I think many many flags were copied from Le Gras, 1858 [leg58]. Some flags are different, obviously Gritzner had taken some newer material. The text is very important as in some cases it differs from the (mistaken) drawings, and sometimes gives correct dimensions.

The book includes details about flags of Hanover and Brunswick. Dr. jur. Hermann Grote was born 28 December 1802 in Hannover. He studied Law in Göttingen. Numismatics led him to heraldry. He published very reknowned books on the Hanoverian and Prussian arms and other numismatic and heraldic publications. He died in Linden 1895 as undisputed senior of the German heraldists and Honorary Member of the German Heraldic Society Herold.

Remarks: Published simultaneously with exhibitions Asafo — Fahnen aus Ghana in Saarbrücken, Berg en Dal, and Bottrop, 1995.

It is a beautiful book with 90 colored plates, all [flags] rather unconventional.
Jarig Bakker, 31 Dec 1999

Anyway this book leans heavily on two books of Rattray: Ashanti Proverbs (1916) and Ashanti (1923), written nearly 100 years ago, about a tribe living to the North of the Fante — which doesn’t seem to be quite correct.
